“Salt is good but if salt loses its taste,

with what can its flavor be restored?”

 Luke 14:34

Opening Hymn: “Ode to Joy”

Joyful, joyful, we adore You, God of glory, Lord of love.

Hearts unfold like flowers before You, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the dark of doubt away.

Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.

All Your works with joy surround You; earth and heav’n reflect Your rays,

Stars and angels sing around You, center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadows, flashing sea

Chanting bird and flowing fountain, praising You eternally.

Always giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest,

Well- spring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest.

Loving Father, Christ our brother; let Your light upon us shine,

Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals join the mighty chorus, which the morning stars began,

God’s own  love is reigning o’er us; joining people hand to hand.

Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife,

Joyful music leads us sunward, in the triumph song of life.

Closing Hymn: “Lift High The Cross”

Refrain:  Lift high the cross the love of Christ proclaim

Till all the world adore his sacred name.

Come Christians follow where the Master trod, our King

Victorious, Christ the Son of God.

Led on their way by this triumphant sign, the

Hosts of God in conquering ranks combine.

Each new born foll’wer of the Crucified bears

On the brow the seal of him who died.

So shall our song of triumph ever be praise

To the Crucified for victory .

Theme: What lessons have I learned as God’s disciple?

Even if we had the wisdom of Solomon, we could not fully understand what God intends.  If we cannot comprehend the things of earth, the things of heaven are beyond our grasp.  Yet with God’s Spirit, the path of knowledge can be made straight as we learn to follow the Lord.

Jesus’ lessons on discipleship are not easy.  One moment He teaches loving concerns for others and then He tells us to turn our backs on everyone else.  Jesus’ instructions are not mutually exclusive.  Being His disciples means that we are not attached to anything that stands in the way of following Him. God’s reign must have first place in our hearts.

Following Jesus exacts a price.  Paul learned to value those things that really mattered through suffering and hardship.  As a prisoner for the Lord, he interceded for others who were in chains.  Paul appealed on behalf of a runaway slave, asking his master to receive him back as a “beloved brother.”  If we are daunted by the high demands of Jesus, we must remember that we are not left on our own to fulfill them.  Worldly wisdom may tell us otherwise, but we have the wisdom of the Spirit to guide us every step of the way.

SOCL CLASSES

The School of Christian Living Classes begins next Sunday, after the 9:00 A.M. Mass. Religious education is very important to our children’s development. We ask all parents to make that extra effort to enroll and maintain their child’s regular class attendance. The Adult Bible & Apologetic Classes will begin September 14th at 7:00 P.M. All are invited to attend this informative class. Religious education is an ongoing discipline of the Church for all ages. There is so much that we don’t know concerning Christ and His Church, which should motivate us to attend religious education.

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME

Wisdom 9:13-18b

Psalm 90

Philemon 9-10, 12-17

Luke 14:25-33

KEY VERSE: "Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple" (v 27).

READING: As Jesus drew closer to his destiny in Jerusalem, he asked his followers to consider whether or not they were prepared to continue the journey. Were they ready to renounce everything, even personal relationships that might interfere with their following him? Jesus asked his disciples to think carefully about the demands that were ahead of them before they made this commitment. He used two examples to explain the need to be prepared. Before a builder could begin construction, he must make an assessment of his materials; otherwise, he might not be able to complete the job. A ruler should weigh the strength of his army before going to battle, or else he might be defeated. Only those who were fully prepared would be able to follow Jesus to the cross that awaited him.

REFLECTING: Pray for those in ministry who make great sacrifices for the sake of the gospel.

PRAYING: Lord Jesus, help me to examine my spiritual strengths and weaknesses so that I can follow you.
